What is the Gadolinium Lawsuit about?
There are 5 Gadolinium based MRI contrast agents that have been approved for use in the United States and they include:
• Magnevist®
• MultiHance®
• Omniscan®
• OptimMARK®
• ProHance ®
These gadolinium based contrast agents are sometimes used for MA procedures (magnetic resonance angiography). However, none are approved by the FDA for this purpose.
The FDA has asked manufacturers to include a new boxed warning on all gadolinium based contrast agents that are used with MRIs. This warning highlights the risk to patients with acute renal insufficiency, chronic renal insufficiency, and acute renal insufficiency of any severity due to hepato-renal syndrome or perio-operative liver transplantation period.
